Ellen's story- Ellen's Aunt, Ellen Kinsella Walsh 1816-1878

Ellen was likely named after her aunt, Ellen Kinsella (Walsh), her father John Kinsella's only sister. I found out more about her aunt from a DNA match on Ancestry.com.

Ellen Kinsella (Walsh)

Ellen Kinsella (Walsh) was born in Kileavaroon to Thomas Kinsella and Margaret Kelter and was baptized on a spring day on 14 May 1816.

With five older brothers, she was surely a welcomed addition to the family. She would have been 18 years old when our Ellen was born; a young girl likely very pleased to have a namesake as a niece. A few years later, she was married  to Thomas Walsh. This family, according to the baptismal records of their children, lived in Kilnaspic. So our Ellen would have continued to see her aunt Ellen when they attended church on Sundays, along with family gatherings.

Their first son, John Walsh, was born in on 27 October, 1837. So he was just a few years younger than our Ellen, his cousin, and likely a playmate of her younger brothers. Another son, Thomas Walsh, was baptized at the church in Kilnaspic on 12 February, 1843.

In February 1867, John Walsh, now 30 years old, married Ellen Hennebery of Cloncunny in Mooncoin Parish. The young couple had bright plans for their future.

Immediately following their marriage, they boarded the ship "City of Paris" in Cobh (Queenstown,) and headed to America. They landed at Castle Garden, in New York City on the first of April, 1867.

But this couple did not end up in Jerseyville with their Kinsella cousins. The 1870 census shows them living in Oyster Bay, Queens, Long Island. John, now 32, had bought land and was a farmer. His wife, Ellen Henneberry Walsh, w 24, and they had 2 sons- Thomas and John, both born in New York. By 1900, John Walsh was farming in Hempstead - the town next to Garden City, Long, Island, where I grew up!

He and Ellen had ten children. Here is a picture they sent back to the family in Ireland, shared on Ancestry.com. Ellen would live until 1916, John until 1918. They are buried at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood, in Mineola, NY. John's birthplace on the Findagrave site is noted as "Mooncoin, County Kilkenny."

Back in Ireland, his parents, Thomas Walsh and Ellen Kinsella, had also passed away- Ellen in 1878 at age 62 and Thomas in 1881 at age 76. They are buried at the church cemetery in Kilnaspick, and if you go to Ireland, you can visit their grave there.
